The series combination of the capacitor and reactor has zero impedance at its resonant frequency,which is the lowest against the line frequency. This series resonant circuit presents the capacitive character at the line frequency, which can improve the power factor, and it takes on the inductive character at the resonant frequency, thus it can prevent the parallel resonance from amplifying the harmonic. For instance, if there is the 5th harmonic in the system, and the impedance is chosen appropriately, the capacitor bank can absorb and eliminate 30% up to 50% of the harmonic current.
